EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
